Biology Unit 3 AOS 1 - What is the role of nucleic acids and proteins in maintaining life?
This unit is composed of two different modules that can be completed individually (approximately 4 hours each). The modules include:
Biology Unit 3 AOS 1: 1.1 - Nucleic acids and proteins
Students will explore nucleic acids and proteins through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:
nucleic acids as information molecules
universal genetic code and the steps in gene expression
the structure of genes
gene regulation
amino acids and the proteins they make
proteins as a diverse group of molecules
role of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus
Biology Unit 3 AOS 1: 1.2 - DNA manipulation
Students will explore DNA manipulation through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:
how enzymes can manipulate DNA.
CRISPR-Cas9 origins and applications
amplification of DNA using polymerase chain reaction
interpretation of gel electrophoresis
the use of plasmids as vectors
