On-Site at Quantum Victoria
Students gain an understanding of classification and use a dichotomous key to order and compare their minibeasts (invertebrates), including identifying external features. Students explore the specific features of minibeasts including their movement, protection mechanisms, sight, and undertake a hands-on activity that illustrates how minibeasts consume food. Using concepts throughout the day, students work in teams to design their own minibeast and justify how the features they have added to their minibeast relate to its classification and its ability to survive.
An extension module complementing the onsite program is available for you to download. This module consists of a student workbook and teacher resource book with solutions.
Asynchronous (Self Delivery)
Students work through activities based on the concepts of classification and use a dichotomous key to classify different minibeasts (invertebrates). The module consists of a student workbook and a teacher resource book with solutions.
The workbook has four activities:
Basic classification of pictures based on characteristics (30 minutes)
Minibeast dichotomous key (2 hours)
Dichotomous key creation - lollies (1.5 hours)
Dichotomous key creation - big cats (2 hours)
